About Christmas
Christmas, celebrated on 25 December, marks the birth of Jesus in the Christian tradition and has grown into a global secular holiday built around gift-giving, shared meals, and light in the darkest weeks of the year. Traditions vary widely by country — candles and Midnight Mass in much of Europe, lights and stockings in the US, Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day as the main celebration in much of Latin America and Scandinavia.

What do you write in a Christmas card?+
Two or three sentences: a wish for the season, something specific about the year you shared, and a look toward the year ahead. If you only have room for one line, make it about rest rather than joy — almost everyone is more tired than they are merry by late December.
"Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays"?+
Match the person, not the calendar. If you know they celebrate Christmas, say Merry Christmas. If you don't know their faith or they celebrate Hanukkah, Diwali, or nothing in particular, "Happy Holidays" or "Wishing you a peaceful end to the year" is safer and warmer than guessing wrong.
What's a good non-religious Christmas wish?+
Focus on rest, warmth, and the people around them. "May your days be quiet, your people be near, and your coffee be hot" is entirely secular and entirely warm. Avoid nativity language, and avoid "reason for the season" — it presumes a belief they may not hold.
